Unity Works lies at the heart of Wakefield, close to the refurbished train station and opposite the Theatre Royal. A grade II listed gem, it has been used and loved by the community since it was established as the Wakefield Co-operative headquarters in 1867.

Unity House (Wakefield) Limited was established as a community benefit co-operative in 2011 to turn the building into a major music venue, conference centre and location for creative businesses.

By October 2013 we had over 200 member investors and had raised the £4m that allowed us to purchase the building from Leatham Estates and start work on site. Unity Works openened Sept 2014.

Over those two years we developed strong partnerships with the Theatre Royal and Backstage Academy who will support the events programme with staff and students. With Backstage and the College, we hope to establish a creative based Wakefield University in the next 4 years.

The plan at a glance:

  • Full refurbishment Unity Hall, a 400-seater venue (750 standing) + the Minor Hall – a 100-seater function room
  • 10,000 square feet of office space
  • 3,500 square feet of meeting space
  • A café / bar on the Westgate / Smyth St corner
  • A gallery on Westgate with reception, exhibition space and independent retail

We are renting space and taking bookings for the Hall from April 2014 onwards. Plans are available on this site and enquiries are welcome at any time (see contacts)

Space is being let to ambitious entrepreneurs at all levels of affordability, from hot-desk space at £50 a month to high spec, fully furnished offices. all with Wi-Fi throughout.

Free informal meeting space exists alongside bookable meeting rooms. Unity Hall and the Minor Hall caters for major national conferencing as well as all types of local events and the gallery area offers exhibition space for local artists and small ‘indie’ retailers.

The co-op is governed by its member shareholders on a one-member, one-vote basis, with groups forming around music programming and business. We believe in success through working together and any surplus cash will go to supporting local creative entrepreneurs and musicians.

Our reception/box office is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. Have a look our ‘What’s On’ page for when we’re open for events.
